As the temperature drops, a growing number of people will begin to question whether winter tires are necessary and where to buy winter tires. If you expect to drive on icy or snowy roads, practically any winter tires will keep your vehicle from sliding, empower you to climb hills better, and stop your vehicle faster around icy corners more effectively than any set of all-season tires. Even if there’s no ice or snow on the roads, winter tires will perform exponentially better in colder temperatures. However, not all winter tires are created equally! Continue reading for a few secret tips for purchasing winter tires.

What’s Your Tire Size?

In the process of researching winter tires, the first thing you’ll be asked is the tire size. You can find it printed on the door frame/edge sticker on your vehicle or embossed on the sidewall of the tire. You’ll notice the tire size as a mixture of both letters and numbers, such as LT265/70R17 or P225/65R16. If the tires on your vehicle do not match the manufacturer’s specifications, you may want to do a bit of research to find out why. It’s important to understand that any time you purchase smaller or larger winter tires than the ones specified by the manufacturer, it will involve changing the rim size as well.

Always Purchase Four Tires

When you’re looking to purchase winter tires, mixing winter tires with all-season tires is a dangerous idea. Just as you wouldn’t attempt to walk outside on a snow-covered sidewalk with leather-soled dress shoes, you should attempt to drive on snowy roads with all-season tires. In both cases, you risk the likelihood of calamity. As the temperature drops and the roads become covered in snow, only a winter tire can deliver the right amount of traction on your vehicle. However, two winter tires and two all-season tires will not do. If two of your wheels grip and two do not, your vehicle will most likely fishtail out of control and cause a wreck.

Buy Early

Have you ever tried to buy flip flops in December? If you have, you can agree it’s pretty difficult. While you may be able to find a pair, the ones you buy are probably the least desirable pair. Finding winter tires are similar. Most tire retailers stock snow tires in the fall. Once the snow starts falling, you’ll probably be left with a selection of tires that are picked over. As a result, it’s imperative to know where to buy winter tires as early as possible.

Should I Buy Winter Tires If I Have a 4WD?

Even if you have a four-wheel drive or traction control on your vehicle, these features regularly offer a false sense of security, especially during the winter. ABS and traction control are essentially designed for stabilizing your vehicle and braking control. However, these technologies do not optimize grip or traction in snowy conditions.
