Every accounting student knows that writing a research paper is a pretty big deal. The business world takes accounting very seriously, especially the corporate business world, where accounting is a major process. That is why many students choose to pursue this profession. But studying accounting is not easy as it requires solid knowledge of financial theory, management practices and, of course, writing a quality research paper.

The good thing about writing a paper is that the process remains largely the same across the board. By following a few steps, one can go from being overwhelmed to effortlessly writing an accounting research paper that will earn them great marks.

6 Steps to Take When Writing an Accounting Research Paper

There is no generally agreed upon structure when it comes to writing a professional accounting research paper in college. The main thing to focus on is how to write the paper effectively and follow the instructions of your professor in order to get a good grade. Try following these six steps when trying to write your paper:

1. Pick a Catchy Topic

Many students find it difficult to pick a topic, making this the stage where many of them get stuck. Students can usually find good topics by doing research or reading and watching the news to get inspired on financial topics that are relevant to them and other people. Topics people are interested in usually include personal finances, increasing revenue, debt management, auditing, and financial markets.

2. Do Some Research

Once you pick a topic, you need to find out everything you can about it to write your paper. You need to have at least three credible sources to base your study on. You can go online to find articles, accounting working papers, books, statistics, studies, and more. You can even go to the library and head over to the financial section to find the relevant books that can help you.

3. Write the Thesis Statement and Make an Outline

Once your research is in order, the next thing to do is to write a thesis statement above the outline of your paper. The thesis statement is one or two sentences that explain the reason why you wrote the paper – its purpose. The outline explains to the reader how you plan to approach the topic by taking the reader through the steps you will use. There are plenty of examples online that can assist you in writing the perfect thesis statement and outline.

4. Write a Draft

Writing a draft usually means including all the main parts of any paper. Specifically, the big three: the introduction, body, and conclusion.

  • Introduction: This is where your thesis statement goes. On top of explaining the purpose of the paper, it also explains the significance of the paper (thesis statement), your goals and motivations. It usually contains one or two sentences – most of the writing happens in the next section.
  • Body: This is the main part of the text where you express your views and back them up with valid arguments and the necessary research. This is where you expand on the methodology you used and present the results of your study to the readers in order to develop trust.
  • Conclusion: This is where you summarize the key points of your paper and explain why your views are rather unique. It is also where you tell readers whether the results of the study are relevant or not. One thing to avoid when writing a conclusion is introducing a new topic, concept or research.
  • References: It is important to cite all the works you used to write your paper, otherwise it will be considered plagiarism. This is a big ‘NO’ when it comes to writing research papers (or any academic paper).

5. Revise the Draft

The initial draft and an outline of your paper will change as you make revisions and uncover more information and ideas during your research. Some ideas may be removed during the process as you replace them with better ones, which might also lead to the structure of the entire paper changing. That is why some people usually have two or three drafts of the same paper before they make the final edits.

6. Proofread the Draft

During the drafting and revising stages, there are bound to be some errors in the text, such as grammar, spelling, and punctuation errors, that need to be corrected. This is where proofreading comes in handy. You might even want to restructure some sentences that contain passive voice or that talk about yourself or the readers (you must always stick to the subject).

If you follow these six steps outlined above, you should be able to turn an overwhelming writing assignment into an effortless one. Accounting may be complicated, but it is a rewarding subject nonetheless. As Warren Buffett said, “Accounting is the language of business,” and that is why you must write the best accounting research paper you can.
