The elemental five-piece drum set

Drum kits come in various configurations beginning with the two-piece setup also known as ‘Kick and snare’ setup to the expansive nine-piece setups. Kick drum and the snare drum are part of every combination and the extra pieces are mostly toms. The ideal one for beginners is the five-piece drum setup. It does not involve too many pieces but is sufficient to practice all types of drumming.

The drum setup consists of

  • Kick drum also is known as bass drum
  • Snare drum
  • Two rack toms
  • Floor Tom

Usually, the five-piece set does not contain cymbals, you can add them separately. To the basic setup, you can add

  • One ride cymbal
  • One hi-hat cymbal
  • One crash cymbal (You may add more)

Cymbals have their own signature sounds depending on the metal used, their size and shape. With this five-piece drum setup and three cymbals, you can practice mastering the basics of any number of styles.

The space occupied by the drum setup

The drum setup requires ample space for practicing. At the end of the practice session, you will be surprised to see how much the drums have moved. It is a good idea to discuss with other members of the family about drum practice so that they are able to either enjoy it or reschedule their work to stay away till you master the basics. Make sure you learn playing drum without causing trouble to others.

In case you are short on space you have the option of buying electronic drums. These take up much lesser space and are easily dismantled and assembled. You can assemble them for practice and then dismantle and store them.

Getting the right sound.

The most crucial part of buying and setting up your drum kit is to discover the right sound. Different drums produce different sound. The sound produced depends on the material the drum is made up of and the physical size in terms of drum diameter and drum depth. The different type of drums producing different sounds is suitable for different types of music.

  • Maple Acoustics – The lows are slighted boosted. The mid and high frequencies are smooth. Most suitable for bright and warm tones known for their resonant nature.
  • Birch Acoustics- The high frequencies are boosted while the low-end has a strong punch. Mainly used for darker and attack tones.
  • Mahogany Acoustics – The low-end frequencies are very rich, the mid frequencies are smooth. These are ideally suited for tones with plenty of attacks.

Select the drum setup that can grow with you

It is an investment for you so it is suggested that you buy the best quality drums that will serve you well for long. As you gain experience the drum kit should be flexible enough to grow with you.
