Dealing with stress is often one of the reasons many people choose to self-medicate in the first place. Without the drugs, they must find new, more effective ways to work through the issues that are causing their stress and also discover ways that allow them to relax and re-center themselves. Relaxing allows them to re-focus their thoughts and concentrate on moving forward.

Everyone Deals With Stress Differently

Everyone deals with stress differently. Some like to talk things over with a friend, while others want to be alone to think. Some people choose to exercise or go for a walk because the fresh air and vigorous activity give provide them extra oxygen their brain needs to function. When a person breathes out they can focus on releasing the bad energy and negative thoughts that often accompany a stressful situation.

Taking Things In Stride

It’s important to understand that many things can’t be changed. No matter how much the person wants a situation to resolve itself, it just may not happen. Counselors at drug rehabilitation facilities also teach how patients how to take things in stride and not stress over the things that are not in their control. They may not be able to control the situation, but they can control how they react to it. The first step is letting go of the stress and frustration and understand that it is up to them to find a way to make the situation better. While they may not be able to change things, they can do their best to improve the situation.

Remaining Drug and Alcohol-Free Through Difficult Situations

Using drugs and alcohol to self-medicate is a common problem for many people. By the time they realize they have a problem, they can’t just walk away. Drug rehabilitation centers offer options for them to choose from that allow them to manage their stress and re-assume control over their lives. Whether they choose inpatient or outpatient treatment, they leave the program with the coping skills they need to work through a stressful situation. Much of what they gain in the way of coping skills involves how they perceive and then react to a situation. Instead of looking for the quick (and unsuccessful) fix that drugs and alcohol provide, they need to learn ways of finding a solution and then putting that solution into action.

Drug rehabilitation centers are there to offer options and coping skills to their patients so they can start fresh without being held back by old habits and thought patterns. Coping with the stress of everyday happenings can be difficult at times, but with the right skills a person can take control of a situation and bring about a positive solution. Breaking old thought patterns and putting positive ones in their place allows a person to react effectively and diffuse a situation before it increases their stress level.
