Comments Off on The Many Different Forms of Elder Abuse

There are several different types of elder abuse.  The most common form of elder abuse is financial abuse; however, there are several other types of elder abuse that include physical abuse, neglect, sexual abuse, verbal abuse, and emotional abuse.  Elder abuse may occur in locations that seem safe, such as a nursing home facility or with family members and trusted caregivers.

Abandonment and Neglect

An elderly individual may be suffering from abandonment or neglect if their caretaker is not performing the necessary duties to ensure the elderly person remains safe, comfortable, and healthy.  Some things that may be neglectful to one individual may not be neglect to another, as this type of abuse depends on the elderly individuals own caretaking needs.  This type of abuse is not limited to hired caretakers, as it can occur with family members or friends who have taken on a caretaking role.

Emotional and Verbal Abuse

Elderly individuals may also suffer from emotional abuse.  This form of abuse typically involves humiliation, name-calling, forms of isolation, terrorizing, intimidation, and threats.  These actions can cause the elderly person to suffer severe distress.

Physical Abuse

Another form of abuse an elderly individual may be susceptible to is physical abuse.  This type of abuse happens when someone uses purposeful or intentional force in such a way that injures an elderly person.  Common types of physical abuse include choking, unnecessary restraints, hitting, and shoving.

Financial Abuse

The most common type of abuse that elderly individuals face is financial abuse.  There are many different forms of financial abuse.  This type of abuse includes instances where a family member or caretaker attempts to take control of the elderly person’s bank account or other financial accounts for their financial gain.  Additionally, attempts to convince the elderly person to make changes to their will can be financial abuse.
